Spent nuclear fuel from Germany to arrive at Valognes on 11 July

The next shipment of spent nuclear fuel from Germany is scheduled to leave on 10 July and arrive at the COGEMA rail terminal in Valognes on 11 July.It will contain a total of 81 fuel elements, packed in five TN 17/2 casks and two TN 12/2 casks.

This fuel comes from the nuclear power plants at Stade (18 elements), Brunsbüttel (34 elements) and Mülheim-Karlich (29 elements).The fuel elements will be placed in the pools at the COGEMA-La Hague plant for cooling. They will then be reprocessed to separate out the recyclable materials. The wastes will be conditioned and sent back to Germany for permanent storage.
