Nuclear Management Partners (NMP), the joint venture comprising AREVA, URS Washington Division and AMEC plc, has been selected as the preferred bidder to become the Parent Body Organisation of the Sellafield Site Licence Company (SLC).
SLC manages and operates the nuclear waste reprocessing and storage facilities at Sellafield in West Cumbria, North West England, on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency (NDA).
According to the NDA, management of this site corresponds to 1.6 billion euros of revenues per year.
The NMP Consortium will now enter into discussions with the NDA that will award the official contract in October 2008. AREVA would therefore be providing technical expertise in used fuel treatment, MOX fabrication and waste management.

The contract under discussion is for an initial period of five years with the potential of further extension periods for a total of 17 years. It covers the Sellafield, Calder Hall, Windscale and Capenhurst sites, which will all form part of the Site Licence Company.
Denis Hugelmann, Executive Vice-President of AREVA’s Recycling Business Unit, said: “We are delighted to be part of the consortium, which has been selected after a very rigorous process lasting almost two years. AREVA’s unique range of skills across the whole nuclear cycle makes an ideal partner for the British nuclear industry.”
The Sellafield site particularly contains the Thorp and Magnox fuel reprocessing plants, the Sellafield MOX plant, the Calder Hall power station, currently being dismantled and waste management facilities.
This is AREVA's second success at the back end of the fuel cycle in the United Kingdom. AREVA is also a partner in UK Nuclear Waste Management Ltd, which was awarded the Parent Body Organisation contract for the UK’s Low Level Waste Repository in Cumbria in March 2008.
