AREVA, via AREVA KOBLITZ, has been awarded a contract worth over 33 million euros by Brazil’s largest private power generator, Tractebel Energia S.A., a GDF SUEZ Group company, to design and build a power plant fuelled by sugar cane bagasse.
This new plant, with a 33 MW capacity, will be installed on the Andrade ethanol plant, owned by the Guarani group, in Pitangueiras, São Paulo. Construction work has already begun and commissioning is scheduled for April 2010. This is the first Tractebel Energia S.A. plant fuelled by sugar cane bagasse.
The contract is the result of a long-term partnership between AREVA KOBLITZ and Tractebel Energia. “AREVA KOBLITZ built Tractebel Energia’s first renewable energies plant – the 28 MW Lages bioenergy co-generation plant in Santa Catarina – and has supported Tractebel in developing its business,” explained Luiz Otávio Koblitz, CEO of AREVA KOBLITZ.
With its headquarters based in Florianópolis (Brazil), Tractebel Energia generates 8% of the country’s total power. Today, over 80 percent of Tractebel Energia's installed capacity comes from renewable energy sources.
Brazil’s renewables market has substantial potential, with an increasing capacity of at least 5% (5000 MW) per year. Sugarcane bagasse co-generation is the country’s largest biomass power plant market and is currently growing at an unprecedented rate. AREVA KOBLITZ is taking full advantage of this trend and with the support of the AREVA group, is placing an increasing number of orders. Since January 2008, AREVA KOBLITZ has recorded a 60% increase in orders compared to the same period last year.
