AREVA signs new contract to supply fuel elements to the research reactor at the Technical University of Munich

6/10/2013

AREVA has signed a contract for several million euros with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany to supply fuel elements for the FRM2 research reactor.

Commissioned in 2004, this research reactor was designed and manufactured by AREVA GmbH, the group’s subsidiary in Germany. With an output of 20 MW, it is dedicated to the production of neutrons for scientific research in the nuclear, industrial, and medical domains. Through this reactor, TUM intends to reinforce the production of Molybdenum 99 and Technetium 99 radioisotopes by 2015. These radioactive elements are some of the most commonly used in the world for medical imaging.

Benoît Bazire, Senior Executive Vice President of AREVA’s Propulsion and research Reactor Business Unit declared: “By renewing its confidence in AREVA’s capabilities, TUM pursues a partnership that was started 25 years ago in the area of fuel. Our group is proud to participate in such an ambitious program that supports both research and nuclear medicine.”
