Brief
At the opening session of the annual seminar of the Canadian Nuclear Association on February 18, John Efford, Canadian minister of natural resources, stated that his country would need more "safe and clean" nuclear-generated power.

The minister's comments were addressed to an audience made up of representatives of government and industry. He pointed out that nuclear power is recognized as one of the safest and cleanest ways to generate electricity and is essential to Canada if it is to comply with its commitments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. Mr. Efford also indicated that the industry is well regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and that the Nuclear Waste Management Organization was making appreciable progress in promoting dialogue among Canadians on nuclear fuel waste disposal.
