FEPC defends fuel treatment

6/21/2004
Brief
The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC) estimates that the direct disposal of used fuel would cost 15 trillion yen (114 billion euros). The cost of not using the Rokkasho fuel treatment plant is estimated at 3 trillion yen (23 billion euros), including 500 billion yen (3.81 billion euros) to dismantle the plant, with the remainder covering compensation to the electric power companies.
FEPC is planning to present this data shortly to the Japanese Atomic Energy Commission, which is currently working on a revision to the country’s long-term nuclear power policy.
