Final version of the "Green Book" adopted by European Commission

7/3/2002
Brief
On 26 June 2002, the European Commission adopted the final version of "Towards an European Strategy for the Security of Energy Supply", otherwise known as the Green Book. Speaking at a press conference, Loyola de Palacio, Commissioner of Energy and Transport, once again emphasized the importance of nuclear power's role in the energy mix. Two of the conclusions of the document adopted by the Commission, which was revised by anti-nuclear member states, pertain to nuclear power: - reliance on nuclear power is not excluded but is a matter to be decided by individual member states as part of their national energy policies; - nuclear power, energy efficiency and renewable energies are the only way to prevent CO2 emissions in the energy sector.
