News brief

An international industry team formed by AREVA Inc announced today the addition of a new member, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), to respond to the U.S. Department of Energy's Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program.

This team, already including Battelle, Washington Group International, BWX Technologies, Inc and Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd., will propose to perform technical and business planning studies on the development of a U.S. advanced treatment/recycling facility and a new generation fast reactor. AREVA will lead the Consolidated Fuel Treatment Center (CFTC) and MHI will lead the Advanced Recycling Reactor (ARR).

Both utilities are targeted to be operational in 2020. GNEP is a global program to develop advanced technologies for recycling and fast reactors to expand the use of clean energy while reducing the waste burden and further limiting the risk of proliferation.
