According to a study of radioactive pollution in northern European waters, radioactive releases to the northeastern Atlantic ocean from Gibraltar to Greenland come largely from oil platforms and the fertilizer industry, and not from nuclear industries. The Marina II study, prepared by independent experts for the European Union's Environment division as an extension of the 1992 Ospar conference, was led by a steering committee composed of representatives from the European Commission and non-governmental organizations, including Greenpeace. Marina II also shows that radioactive waste is 100 times less potent than in the 1960s and 70s.
