Entergy Nuclear has selected its Grand Gulf site as the potential location of a new nuclear power plant, and it plans to submit an application to the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June, 2003. Entergy Nuclear stated that the decision to seek approval for a site does not mean committing to build a new reactor. It does retain the option for an extended period, as NRC's licensing process allows a company to keep the permit for up to 20 years.
The Grand Gulf site is located in the state of Mississippi and one of six sites in the U.S. owned by Entergy Nuclear. The company indicated it picked Grand Gulf, which currently has one nuclear reactor, because of the existing transmission system capable of accommodating an additional nuclear reactor and for access to potential markets.
