Treatment activity:

During this period, the Establishment treated 47 tons of spent fuel assemblies coming from EDF's power plants .

From all treated assemblies, a total of 698 tons have been processed to date this year.

During this period, 6 canisters of vitrified fission products have been produced(1).

Since the beginning of the year, 291 canisters have been produced.
It should be noted that the facility of hulls compaction (ACC) produced 23 canisters of compacted residues.
Since the beginning of the year, 385 canisters have been produced.

The actuality, it is also....

Two arrivals of spent fuel assemblies...

Two shipments of spent fuel assemblies from Germany and  Netherlands arrived at the Valognes railway terminal respectively the September 4th and 5th, 2003.

... and one departure of vitrified residues

September 9, took place the 6th return of vitrified residues from France to Belgium. This transport consisted of a packing containing 28 canisters of glass. The return of the vitrified residues from the COGEMA La Hague plant, in France, to  Belgium, is being made under reprocessing-recycling contracts between SYNATOM and COGEMA and in accordance with directives from Belgian authorities.

(1)The fission products (ultimate residues of spent fuel) are incorporated in heated glass to approximately 1100°C. The whole is poured in stainless steel containers. The fission products are an integral part of stable, compact and resistant glass. This process is called vitrification.
