Death of nobel laureate in physics Georges Charpak, member of the AREVA scientific and ehtic committee

It is with great sadness that AREVA has learned of the death of Nobel laureate in physics, Georges Charpak. The AREVA group offers its sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Charpak.

Georges Charpak dedicated his life first to nuclear physics, then to the physics of high-energy particles. He received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1992 for the development of particle detectors, notably the multiwire proportional chamber, invented in 1968.

Since 1984, Professor Charpak held the Joliot-Curie Chair at the École supérieure de physique et de chimie de Paris. He also developed "La main à la pâte", a hands-on program intended to offer a fun approach to teaching science to children in Europe.

Georges Charpak was a member of the AREVA Scientific and Ethics committee, contributing much to the group’s reflection on the major societal stakes related to the energy sector.
